CPR in Schools

Hello!

NASA, Bank of England and Liverpool CPRiS. All great institutions, all led by ridiculously good looking and charming people.

In case you didn’t know CPRiS stands for Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation in Schools. Medical students go into schools and youth clubs to teach people how to perform CPR.

Forget trying to reach the moon or stop the credit crunch, successful CPR performed by Mr Joe Public who has been trained means that instead of only 2% of cardiac arrest patients in the community surviving, 50% of cardiac arrests will live. That’s why you should get stuck in.

Teddy Bear Hospital

Hi!

I started setting up Teddy Bear Hospital Liverpool 3 years ago.  After a year of organizing issues such as child protection and the general running of the project we successfully started visiting primary schools in 2006.

Over the last 2 years we have visited primary schools all over Liverpool and had lots of good feedback!

Basically we tell the children a story about healthy living with large cardboard pictures and then split the children into small groups to work with the “Teddy Doctors” to diagnose and treat the teddies.  The children get a bandage for their teddy and a certificate to take home.

This all helps reduce children’s fear of doctors and improves the medical student’s paediatric communication skills. It looks great on your CV and it is a lot of fun!

This year Rhys Williams will be the new Project Manager and we hope to form a committee to help him make the project grow in strength.

Hopefully see you at the next Teddy Bear Hospital Meeting,

Beginning of a new year

Hello everyone,

Let me introduce myself - I am Mark Lavery, I am an intercalating medical student, doing an MSc at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, and I am the president of Liverpool Medsin for this academic year.

So what will we be doing in Medsin this year?

First of all, we will be continuing on with the successful activities of the previous years - so Medsinema will be back, as will the World AIDS Day pub crawl.

Our projects are still up and running and beginning a new year with hopes for going to new strengths - see the Teddy Bear Hospital and CPRiS pages for more information on what is going on with them!

Campaigns in Liverpool are beginning to get on their feet - we have WaterAid and Keep Our NHS Public campaigns starting and continuing with StopAIDS.

New this year too will be the Global Health Education Project. We hope to get some plenaries and working groups organised throughout the year to inform students about what global health is and why it is important. Go to the GHEP information page to learn more.

Finally, the most obvious new feature this year is this website! I hope you find it useful and easy to navigate. I will use this blog on a weekly (hopefully!) basis to keep everyone up to date with what is going on in Medsin.

Signing off now, one last thing - please do come to our meeting on Monday 6th October and to the first Medsinema on the 13th October. More information on these will follow.

Best Wishes

Mark Lavery

Welcome to Liverpool Medsin Blog!

Medsin is a network of students with an interest in health.

Medsin’s activities aim to promote health as well as to act upon and educate students about health inequalities in our local and global communities.

Liverpool Medsin is your local branch of this national network. We currently have projects running teaching school children basic life support and teaching primary school children about hospitals and health. We also have some campaigns and other activities running, with the possibility for expansion! All we need is your input.

Read more about the activities, projects and campaigns in this website and the national Medsin website (www.medsin.org).
